If I as a teacher can create an environment in my classroom of openness and mutual respect, then students will have an increased potential for learning because Vygotsky's theory of social learning states that learning is a function of a students social context. Additionally, according to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, a student must first feel secure, safe and have a sense of belonging before cognitive growth can be achieved. (from wk 2 in class work)
